Getting Items

Skokie cardholders can request items be reserved for pickup at the library or at one of the bookmobile's community stops

Requesting Items

Log in to your library account and search the catalog for items you would like to check out.

You can filter your search results to only the available items by checking the box on the left side of the screen.

Choose whether you would like the items held at the library or taken to a bookmobile community stop. If you aren’t prompted to choose a pickup location when you place a hold, you may need to turn off one-click holds in your library account. You can also change your settings to set your default pickup location.

We will get the requested items off the shelf and set them aside for you. This may take several days depending on when you make your request, the availability of the item, how many requests we're working on, and our staff availability.

When your items are ready to be picked up you will receive an email confirmation. Please wait until you receive that email before coming to get them. Your items will not be ready until we notify you.

Picking Up Items

After you receive an email stating that your items are ready, you will have seven days to pick them up at the location you selected when you placed the hold.

If you selected pickup at the library, enter through the west doors during holds pickup hours:

  • Monday-Friday, 10 am-7 pm
  • Saturday, 10 am-6 pm
  • Sunday, noon-6 pm

Your items will already be checked out to you. Just grab them and go!
This is to keep everyone safe, by minimizing the length of time that anyone needs to be indoors. It also helps keep the line short and fast!

If you selected pickup at the bookmobile, visit any of our scheduled community stops.

Please wear a mask when picking up your holds and follow all the posted safety guidelines. Learn more about what to expect when you visit.

Event Supplies

Certain registered library events include materials, which you will need to pick up at the library. After you register for a program that includes materials, we will notify you via email when your packet is ready for pick up. Enter the west doors and proceed to the holds pickup area. Look for the envelope with your name on it inside the blue cubbies. You can also make arrangements to pick up your event supplies from one of the bookmobile's community stops. Just follow the instructions in your email confirmation.

Print Pickup

We can print black and white documents for you by request. We can only print in black and white at this time. You will be notified by staff when your prints are ready. Printed documents will be placed in a sealed security envelope. Enter the west doors and proceed to the holds pickup area. Look for the envelope with your name on it inside the blue cubbies. You will have 7 days to pick them up.

Returning Items

You may return checked out items by placing them in the open book drop on the south driveway of the library, using the self-service return station inside the west doors during service hours, or bringing them to one of the bookmobile's community stops. Please allow a few days for returned items to come off of your library account.

Donations are still prohibited. Any non-library items placed in the book drop will be disposed of.

Availability of Items

When you search the catalog for items, you may notice that many are marked Unavailable. This is due to our ongoing renovation project. Much of our collection has been placed into storage temporarily while construction continues inside our building. We are not able to request items from other libraries via LINKIN or interlibrary loan at this time, and we appreciate your patience with the temporarily limited selection. Don’t forget that we also have a huge selection of eBooks and other digital items that you can check out from home!

You may not find exactly what you're looking for, but we're here to help. Our expert staff have created lots of lists of their favorite titles. We can also recommend titles specifically for your tastes through our Bookmatch and Screenmatch services.
