Changes to e-Book Borrowing

Starting February 1, 2025, Skokie cardholders are allowed three Libby holds per card. Patrons with more than three previously held items will not lose them, but will not be able to place new holds until they have fewer than three. If you use your holds to manage your to-read list, we encourage you to use tags instead. And if you’re looking for titles to enjoy immediately, use the app’s “Available Now” filter. Hoopla checkouts will also be limited to 20.

These limits are needed due to increased demand and associated costs. Libraries pay up to three times more to license digital books than to purchase print ones. When those licenses expire, libraries also have to pay again to continue circulating the item. For example, one hardcover copy of Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarrow costs the library just under $20 and stays in circulation in perpetuity. A single digital copy of the eBook costs us $60 and expires after 24 months. This is also why wait times can be longer in Libby than for print titles. Learn more from NPR's Book of the Day podcast.
