Our expert staff take a look back at the year and share their favorite titles.

  • The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir

    2017 by Bui, Thi

"This is a powerful graphic novel about one woman’s family before, during, and long after the Vietnam War, a war that traumatized her father and caused a legacy of pain and struggle for her family. It is bookended by the story of her own pregnancy, her own journey towards building family, and connects the strands brilliantly. Pale, water-color art throughout provides a kind of palimpsest feel that reinforces the uncertainty and warmth of memory."

  • My Favorite Thing Is Monsters

    2016 by Ferris, Emil

"Turbulent late-sixties Chicago. A murder mystery. A girl who sees herself as a werewolf. Nazis and other monsters. This graphic novel is a masterpiece. The artwork is beyond amazing and the story is truly original. Emil Ferris is a genius. I loved it, loved it, loved it."

  • Sunburning

    2017 by Roberts, Keiler

"Sunburning is Keiler Roberts' third hilariously deadpan take on artist-motherhood in comics form. Roberts is a brilliant comedic voice and talented artist. She captures those small, countless moments of absurdity all parents weather, but rarely remember, while raising babies/preschoolers and she does it in ways that make me hurt with laughter. The art—thin, tense, and expressive—is a perfect match to the wit and ironic observations of her books."

  • Poe: Stories and Poems : A Graphic Novel Adaptation

    2017 by Hinds, Gareth

"If you love Poe, you will delight in this graphic adaptation of some of his lesser known, as well as popular, stories and poems. Amazing illustrative details highlight these gothic horror renditions of his masterful works."

  • Deadpool: Too Soon?

    2017 by Corin, Joshua

"Joshua Corin may be new to writing Deadpool, but he completely understands what makes the character work so well. Corin brings on the zaniness and laughs as Deadpool teams up with an array of Marvel’s more ridiculous characters—including Squirrel Girl, Ant-Man, Howard the Duck, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot—to solve a murder. If he keeps writing this well, I’ll have a new favorite author."

  • The Customer Is Always Wrong

    2017 by Pond, Mimi

"Fictionalized memoir of the author's life set as a graphic novel. Both funny and poignant at the same time. Oakland in the late 70s, with all the sleaze balls and eccentric characters one would find, working as a waitress in a day job, while illustrating as her 'true job'."

  • Harley Quinn: A Celebration of 25 Years

    2017

"Now is the time to celebrate Harley Quinn. She’s been entertaining us through 25 years of different outfits and hairstyles while staying true to her own ditsy, daffy, and dangerous self. While this omnibus volume collects a generous sampling of her most notable madcap adventures, the true fan can never get enough Harleyness in his or her life."
