  • Nothing: John Cage and 4' 33"

    2024 by Day, Nick

While this beautifully designed book is ostensibly a biography of composer John Cage and the story of his most (in)famous work, it’s also very much about developing patience, slowing down, and opening one's ears to the rich tapestry of sounds that surround us regardless of where we live. It’s a symphony out there, and Cage’s 4’33” challenges all of us to be inclusive listeners. Suggested by Adam.

  • Best Friend!

    2024 by Fang, Vicky

I really enjoyed this sweet story about six-year-old Ava. She is a typical first grader (who loves collecting things in her pockets) facing everyday problems that will be relatable for kids. Cute illustrations and large text will make this approachable for kids ready to read chapter books. Suggested by Judy.

  • Gifts from the Garbage Truck

    2024 by Larsen, Andrew

Nelson Molina invites us to reflect on trash vs. treasure in this account of his time as a NYC sanitation worker. As a child, Nelson’s ability to see the treasures in the trash brought joy to his siblings, and later in life, provided his coworkers a fresh way to view their crucial work. Perhaps the story will inspire you to think more holistically about your possessions. Suggested by Adam.
