  • Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong

    2016

Hong Kong's lively nightlife takes center stage in this dramedy about a woman from Los Angeles in Hong Kong on a business trip who meets an American expat. Filmmaker Emily Ting based her script partially on her own life and took inspiration from the movies Lost in Translation and Before Sunset. Another fun fact: real-life couple Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg play the two leads. Available from Hoopla.

  • Austenland

    2007 by Hale, Shannon

New Yorker Jane Hayes has a crush on Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC miniseries, thus her endless dating slump. When a relative arranges a trip to an Austen-themed hotel where guests immerse themselves in all things Regency, Jane thinks this is the way to squelch her obsession. Narrator Katherine Kellgren does a terrific job voicing all the characters. If you like this, there is a 2013 movie adaptation with Keri Russell and a book sequel, Midnight in Austenland. Available as an audiobook from Hoopla and eBook from Overdrive.

Noni is a troubled singer on the cusp of superstardom. Kaz is a young police officer who sees through the hype. When the two form a romantic connection, they go off grid to escape the media and pressure, much to the chagrin of Noni's manager mother. While there is a gorgeous on-a-break beach scene, this really is about another type of vacay. Available from Hoopla and Kanopy.

  • A Month by the Lake

    1995

The location is a picturesque villa situated on Lake Cumo. Perhaps that's all you need to know to grab some gelato, hit play, and armchair travel to Italy. Nonetheless, here's the scoop. Set in 1937, a middle-aged woman (Vanessa Redgrave) starts a tentative romance with another guest, an industrialist played by Edward Fox. Then a flirtatious American working as nanny (Uma Thurman) checks in and Cupid's arrow flies askew. Available from Hoopla.

There will not be a vacation to Mexico. Clara Shin has to work on her father's food truck all summer alongside her classmate nemesis Rose Carver as punishment for a high school prank that morphed into chaos. Maurene Goo is one of my new favorite YA authors. There is a multicultural LA vibe, snappy dialogue, and likable characters. I ate it all up. Available as audiobook and eBook from Overdrive.
