Young Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) is an NAACP lawyer travelling the country, defending people of color wrongly accused of crimes, including a definitive case in 1940.

Marshall travels to Bridgeport, Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with the sexual assault of his white employer (Kate Hudson). Hindered by a segregationist court, Marshall teams up with a young Jewish lawyer (Josh Gad) to mount a defense despite an environment of racism and anti-Semitism.
