Maudie (Sally Hawkins) suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that has affected her gait and mood. Seeking independence and the ability to express herself, she turns to painting.
Opportunities are scarce for women seeking work in rural Nova Scotia in the 1930s, so Maudie finds a job keeping house for Everett (Ethan Hawke), a cruel and coarse fishmonger. Meanwhile, Maudie's paintings are celebrated by an increasingly international audience, which has consequences for the budding relationship between Everett and Maudie. Based on a true story.
