Pages through History: The Bright Ages--A New History of Medieval Europe
Wednesday, August 30, 2023
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Cosmos Room
What do you think of when you hear the words "the Middle Ages" or "Medieval?" Knights and castles? A "Dark Age" when life was "nasty, brutish, and short?"
Whatever you have in mind, Matthew Gabriele and David Perry will probably challenge it. Their book The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe gives us a world where the line between eras was always blurry, where ideas flowed between "civilizations" (and religions), and where a "barbarian" king in darkest England might decide to fancify his coinage with imitation-Arabic script.
