It was A Raisin in the Sun and The Man with the Golden Arm and Kukla, Fran and Ollie. It was McDonald's and improv and the birth of rock 'n' roll. It was Emmett Till. It was Chicago in the 1940s and '50s, and even those who were there don't know the full story.
