Event
Women's Role in Abolition and the Underground Railroad
Sunday, March 13, 2022
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Radmacher Room
Learn about women's contributions to both the abolition of slavery and the Underground Railroad.
In honor of Women's History Month, scholar and artist Deena Uzzell walks us through the stories of several key abolitionists, moving from the Atlantic coast to the Midwest, including the Grimke sisters, Abby Kelley, Lucretia Mott, and the Weston sisters.
From there, Deena focuses on women who supported the Underground Railroad: Polly Johnson, Esther Moore, Abigail Goodwin, and Sarah Bonine. We'll explore the history of a community of Black and white people working together in Michigan, wrapping up with discussion about Mary Richardson Jones, based in Chicago.
Limited to 20 participants who must follow the library's pandemic safety guidance.
Online registration is closed.
