Read and then discuss this story of transition in Istanbul, which features the Pera Palace hotel and the birth of the Republic of Turkey.

Midnight at the Pera Palace: The Birth of Modern Istanbul spans the end of the Ottoman Empire, through WWI and the start of the Republic of Turkey, when Istanbul went through great change. Using the Pera Palace Hotel as a backdrop, King skillfully shows how Istanbul and its people reacted to these changes and how modern Turkey started.
