BOOMbox: Design
February 8, 2017
Through April 15th, we’re exploring designing and making using some of our favorite tools and resources from previous rotations of the BOOMbox. In February, we shift to sewing for fast fashion, along with textile experiments. In March and April we'll be drawing, painting, and exploring photography through hands-on activities and experiments. Expect to see a variety of tools and resources that change weekly.
Mentors continue to facilitate weekly micro workshops, which are 15-30 minute mini lessons to engage learners in group activities or discussions.
One of our mentors, Jimmy, had this to say:
"I am super excited about the Design rotation in the BOOMbox. I frequently hear from micro workshop and drop-in visitors that they really have learned something new or found a new passion after participating in a featured activity or program. And the learning space is the perfect environment to try new, fun, and challenging things. While learning alone side one another, I have seen many friendships form and grow--some even planning to return during another drop in session to work together. Many new and returning learners have also been inspired to take the new skills they learned during a micro workshop or featured activity as their new hobby or go-to DIY project. I think it is very unique to have a space that brings both fun and learning to the Skokie Public Library, and that is exactly what the BOOMbox offers to the community."
We’re continuing our regular offerings of events and classes for all ages. For youth, series programs like Science Club Jr., Science Club, and Be the Scientist. Challenge Accepted for grades 6-8 poses different engineering, design, and social challenges every other Friday.
And for adults, we have a great lineup of hands-on workshops including modern handlettering, knitting and crochet patterns, and more. Additionally, we are continuing the monthly Friday Night with TED event series, where we’ll watch a TED Talk and have a group discussion about what learned and how it might apply to our daily lives. This month’s talk is about the teaching design for community-led social change and next month will look at the bringing 3D holograms into the real world. See the events calendar for all BOOMbox programs and classes.
We’re looking forward to another great rotation of experimentation, making, and discovery. What will you learn today?
