Skokie Millennium Time Capsule

Skokie residents contributed to a millennium time capsule in 2000, and it has been stored safely at the library. Now, after 25 years, it’s time to open it. What will we find inside? Come to one of our celebratory events.

Upcoming Events

Family Time Capsules

Monday, August 4, 2025, 6:00 pm

Decorate and fill a time capsule all about you and your family.

Bring in pictures and small items you want to include inside. We'll provide the container for you to decorate and have some activities to complete as a family.

This program is for families with children age 0-12. Registration required.

Trivia from the Year 2000: Third Space Thursday

Thursday, August 7, 2025, 6:30 pm

In preparation for opening Skokie's 25-year time capsule on Sunday, August 17, come test your knowledge on all things from the year 2000 (and maybe beyond!).

We'll have snacks and other activities for you to drop in and enjoy.

If home is your "first space" and work is your "second space," then the library can be your third space--a communal place for spending time away from home and work that provides a low-key social environment. We'll provide snacks and activities for creative, community-building time.

Y2K Craft Party

Thursday, August 14, 2025, 4:30 pm

In recognition of the library's 25-year time capsule being opened, we're having a crafting party inspired by the year 2000.

Projects are intended for children age five and older. Children younger than eight must be accompanied by an adult. Families are encouraged to attend together. Drop-in event with limited space.

Skokie Millennium Time Capsule Opening and Celebration

Sunday, August 17, 2025, 1:30 pm

Skokie residents contributed to a millennium time capsule in 2000, and it has been stored safely at the library. Now, after 25 years, it’s time to open it. What will we find inside?

Skokie civic leaders will unseal the time capsule to reveal artifacts from 25 years ago, followed by a reception and an opportunity to reflect on the past 25 years in Skokie.

This is a joint project of the Skokie Historical Society, Village of Skokie, Skokie Park District, and Skokie Public Library.
