Great Decisions Discussion Group: South Africa's Fragile Democracy
Wednesday, July 18, 2018
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Radmacher Meeting Room
This group meets monthly to discuss a topic of current affairs. In July, we focus on the fragile democracy of South Africa.
The African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. In 2018, the party suffers from frustration over corruption and economic stagnation. Opposition from the left and right threaten its stability, and prospects for a closer relationship with the United States are few. A weak ANC could lead to political fragmentation in this relatively new democracy.
