Main Street Opera presents a double bill of two short operas in the same Sicilian setting, separated by two generations.
In Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, the young man, Turiddu, abandans Santuzza in his pursuit of the married Lola and ends up being killed in a duel with Lola's husband, Alfio. In Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, Canio is the leader of a traveling vaudeville troupe. Nedda, his unfaithful young wife, plans to run away with her lover. Her plot is foiled by her spurned admirer Tonio, with tragic consequences. Today's performance is fully staged with costumes and piano accompaniment.
