The Changing Chicago Accent

Tuesday, August 22, 2017
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Radmacher Meeting Room

The "classic" Chicago accent is changing, and writer Ted McClelland will discuss how this transformation is happening.

The dialect of the Daleys, the sound of CTA announcements, lampooned on "Bill Swerski's Superfans"—is changing. Ted McClelland, author of How to Speak Midwestern, explains where the Chicago accent originated, what led to its unique vowel sounds ("blahk" for "block"), its specifically segregated history, and why the classic accent is fading. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
