Article Discussion: A Knife Forged in Fire

Tuesday, June 11, 2024
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Cosmos Room

Library staff facilitate a discussion of two thought-provoking articles related to humanity's relationship with iron, the basest of base metals that is actually extraordinary.

National Geographic’s “Metal from the Heavens” follows scientists who are finding that wherever in the world they look–Egypt, China, Mesopotamia, Minnesota–the oldest worked iron is always meteorite iron.

Did the people who used it know it came from the sky? "A Knife Forged in Fire" from Chicago Magazine introduces a Skokie bladesmith who makes high-end cutlery from the fabled alloy known as Damascus steel. Read the article on Chicago Magazine's website, and come with questions, impressions, and curiosity to share.
