Arriving in Salem from Scotland in the early 1800s, Isobel, left penniless and alone by her husband in a strange country, is instantly drawn to Nathaniel Hawthorne.

As the two grow closer and closer, they are a muse and a dark storyteller, the enchanter and the enchanted.
