What was happening around 1776 in the territories that became the U.S.? If you leave out the Revolutionary War, what would the story of this continent be at that time?

Glancing at a map will tell you that the original thirteen colonies that declared independence in 1776 made up a comparatively tiny portion of what is now the United States.

Elsewhere, European powers jockeyed for dominance, fur trappers took part in a global trade network, and dozens of Native American peoples--from Lakota nomads to Muskogee seafarers--navigated a continent that was still largely theirs.
