Before winning Best International Film at this year's Oscars, director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi was quietly creating films exploring youth, romance, and modern Japan.

One of his best early films, Asako I & II keeps the youth and romance while adding a compelling dash of mystery and even fable to the story. A quiet gem. In Japanese with English subtitles.
