Teacher loan guidelines
The following guidelines are established for material loans to schools serving the children of Skokie:
Getting a card
Teachers working in schools that serve the children of Skokie are eligible for library cards and the teacher resource bag service. The principal must sign an authorization form and send a staff list approving use of the card by the administrators, teachers, and aides included on the list. Each person authorized for checkout privileges will have a separate barcode with the card issued first to the school, followed by the person's name. (E.g. EDISON- Linda Jones). Cards will be given to each school for distribution to school personnel.
Each teacher may borrow a maximum of 30 items from the library for the established loan periods. Print books have a loan period of three (3) weeks. The loan periods for other materials such as DVDs vary. Books and some other materials can be renewed online, by phone, or in person. Most adult materials are available for checkout and teachers may also download eAudiobooks and eBooks according to library guidelines. eReader devices, adult Most Wanted books, and Hot Picks DVDs are excluded from school loans. When filling resource bag requests, it may be necessary to limit the number of items to ensure materials are also available for others.
Prompt return of materials ensures continued access to this service. We count on cooperation from schools and teachers to make materials available to all library users. Schools are responsible for the cost of lost or damaged materials. This includes the bags used for school loans. Overdue notifications will be sent to the individual three times via email. Failure to respond will result in the school administration being notified and suspension of the individual's loan privileges. Continued abuse will result in termination of the individual’s school loan privileges. Loan privileges will be frozen for any school with teachers who have outstanding accounts from the previous year. Overdue, missing, or damaged material must be returned or paid for in order to clear the account.
Resource bag requests may be submitted via the online form. A minimum of seven (7) days’ notice is required. As much lead-time as possible is suggested when a teacher wishes to have materials selected by Youth Services staff. If the school is near a scheduled bookmobile stop, resource bags can be put on the bookmobile for pick-up. Resource bags will be held at the East Checkout Desk for 3 days after pickup notification unless special arrangements have been made.
Each resource bag will include a list of all loaned materials with their due dates. Materials should be returned to either the East or West Checkout Desk or the bookmobile.
Using the library
Teachers may also come to the library to select their own materials at any time. They may use the automated checkout stations or the West Checkout Desk to check out materials. A receipt detailing the items checked out and their due dates can be provided.
Checkouts and holds
Using their library card, teachers may place reserves on materials that are currently checked out. In order to contact teachers when their materials are ready, the library must have the teacher’s email address on file.
