  • Sleeping Giants : book one ot the Themic files

    2016 by Sylvain Neuvel

"It all started when a young girl fell into a hole with a giant metal hand at the bottom. Years later, that girl is part of a team of scientists and military personnel aiming to understand what this possibly alien object can do, and what it might mean for humans. The narrative takes the form of entries in the project's case file, adding a particular edge to this sci-fi mystery."

  • The Invisible Library

    2016 by Genevieve Cogman

"It’s everything I love in fantasy fiction and I could hardly put this down. There is a highly-trained librarian spy who time travels to an alternate steampunk reality that has vampires, werewolves, fairies, and dragons, in order to collect a rare and dangerous book for a shadowy organization. I want this author to write an episode for Doctor Who."

"Like the best episodes of Doctor Who and Firefly, The Invisible Library is witty, inventive and fun. I devoured this book and loved the mix of steampunk, fantasy and adventure."

  • Monstress

    2016 by Marjorie M Liu

"Words like "rich," "intricate," and "inventive" apply both to the artwork and the world-building making up this stunning fantasy graphic novel, a true feast for the eye and mind. Fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman will be in heaven."

  • I'm Thinking of Ending Things

    2016 by Iain Reid

"Atmosphere is everything is this disturbing tale of a relationship gone horribly wrong. The tension and sense of unease begins immediately and never lets up until the book’s surprising climax. Never has a late night visit to a Dairy Queen been more sinister."

  • Blood Crime

    2016 by Sebastià Alzamora

"The dark shades of John Webster, Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley, and Bram Stoker haunt this gothic thriller in which a vampire is not the worst monster to stalk the streets of Barcelona during the cruel days of the Spanish Civil War. This novel reads like the best movie Guillermo del Toro has never filmed."

  • The Suicide Motor Club

    2016 by Christopher Buehlman

"Buehlman takes the standard myths of vampires, the usual tropes of a road novel and combines them into an original and exciting tale. In the midst of mayhem and violence, Buehlman creates characters who are complex and three dimensional. This is a horror novel that is also a revenge tale, a story of female empowerment and a crackling good adventure."

  • A Gathering of Shadows

    2016 by Victoria Schwab

"This sequel to one of my favorite fantasy novels of 2015 does not disappoint. The story picks up with Lila Bard on a pirate ship. Lila, an escapee from Grey London (a world without magic), is excited to be exploring the world beyond Red London and her own latent magical talents. She still thinks of Kell, the prince of sorts in Red London, who she shared an adventure (and a hint of romance) with in Red London 4 months ago. Lila and her fellow pirates are drawn back to Red London by the Element Games, an Olympics for magicians. Daring magical duels, romance, adventures and the magical writing of Schwab make this book a must read. It will be hard to wait for book 3!"

  • The Last Days of New Paris : a novella

    2016 by China Miéville

"What if instead of an atomic bomb, WWII saw the detonation of a surrealist bomb? The S-Bomb brought modern artworks off the canvas and into real life as "manifs" (manifestations) who now stalk the streets of a nightmarish Paris, where resistance fighters battle Dali's dreams-made-real as much as they do the Nazis. (Nazis, incidentally, who are even more in touch with occult power than the tabloids would have you believe.) It's not quite sci-fi, nor fantasy, but like all good Mieville works, this novella will leave your brain sore and your imagination exhausted."

  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina / Story by Roberto Aguirre-sacasa ; Artwork by Robert Hack ; Lettering by Jack Morelli.

    2016 by Roberto Sacasa

"This is not your granny's Archie comic. It's dark, it's bloody (really, really bloody), and you'll be thinking maybe your high school years weren't so bad after all because at least Madame Satan wasn't stalking your hometown's youth! Set in the 60s (look out for Ann-Margaret's cameo!), the art work is gloriously affectionate for vintage pulp and Dark Shadows."

  • Wytches

    2015 by Scott Snyder

"Speaking of witches, here's an unconventional take on those supernatural sisters from Scott Snyder. These aren't the cauldron-stirrers you're expecting. Nor is it the standard creepy New England of literary convention. Here we have something more like Texas Chainsaw Massacre-brand hillbillies except in New Hampshire--and some really good reasons not to go into the woods. Fans of Stranger Things will feel a certain Upside-downyness to the aesthetic. The twists will keep you guessing, the art will keep you shivering, and you might be rushing into the library to research your genealogy just to make sure you're not in for some ancestral payback of your own!"
