  • Te Llevo Conmigo: I Carry You with Me

    2021

Based on a true story, this film follows Ivan and Gerardo, who met as young men in Mexico, fell in love, and illegally crossed over to the U.S. with hope to find opportunities and acceptance, but leaving behind loved ones. The actors playing younger versions of Ivan and Gerardo are affecting and beautifully convey the multifaceted meaning of “you” as well as home and family, while the real Ivan and Gerardo appear as their older selves to bring everything full circle. Suggested by Sharon and Rummanah.

  • Breaking Fast

    2021

Nominated for this year's GLAAD award for Outstanding Film in Limited Release, director Mike Mosallam's heartwarming romantic comedy is set during Ramadan when Mo, a practicing Muslim living in West Hollywood, is learning to navigate life post heartbreak until he unexpectedly meets Kal. I found the movie's portrayal of a cross-cultural relationship and its exploration of the intersectionality between identity, culture, and faith to be refreshing, heartfelt, and introspective. • Parallel Mothers

    2022

From legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, this melodrama centers on two women who give birth to daughters on the same day in the same hospital. You might think you know where this is going--yet perhaps not. Almodovar masterfully structures a subplot about the horrors of the Franco regime, and these themes come together in a very impactful way. Suggested by Chris and Sharon.

Set in Tbilisi, Georgia, this film follows Merab, a young man whose goal is to dance with the National Georgian Ensemble. The dancing is exciting and culminates in a strong statement about inclusion and freedom. Suggested by Sharon.

  • Moonlight

    2017

Filmmaker Barry Jenkins offers a haunting drama, visiting main character Chiron in three stages of his life: as child, teenager, and young man. In each stage, a different actor plays Chiron, as he explores his sexuality, struggles to figure out who he is, and when it is OK to be the person that he is. There is hardship and heartbreak; there is also beauty and hope. This won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture. Suggested by Sharon.

  • Sublet

    2021

The story follows Michael, a New York Times travel writer who is in Tel Aviv for one week to do research for his next article, subletting an apartment from Tomer, a young film student in need of extra cash. A generation gap seems to divide their approach to life, but as the two gay men spend time together, they find common ground. It's full of tenderness and reflection, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Suggested by Sharon.

Written, created, and executive produced by the acclaimed graphic novelist Noelle Stevenson, She-Ra: Princesses of Power is a wonderful, inclusive in both race and LGBTQ+ characters, reimagining of the popular 1980s animated television show. Friendship, teamwork, romance, humor, and fully realized characters are the cornerstones of this not to be missed television show. Suggested by Rummanah.

  • Monsoon

    2021

Independent writer/director Hong Khaou crafted this movie from some of his own experiences, delving into such themes as cultural identity, family, loneliness, and connectedness. It follows Kit (Henry Golding), a British Vietnamese man returning to his place of birth after 30 years. His family fled the war-torn country when he was six years old, and now he wants to find a place to scatter his parents’ ashes. Kit’s stay in Vietnam introduces unexpected and deeper connections, including a romantic relationship with Lewis (Parker Sawyers), whose supporting character arc is also very interesting. I liked the quiet, thoughtful observations throughout, the authenticity of the storyline, and the stunning location shots. Suggested by Sharon.
