'Beach' Movies on Hoopla

By Cecilia Cygnar

The equivalent of "beach reads," these movies are light and fun...perfect popcorn movies for summer nights.

  • Emma

    1996

One of the better Jane Austen film adaptations, as well as one of Austen's lighter, effervescent stories. Gwyneth Paltrow radiates a glow throughout this movie, in what became her breakout performance.

  • 13 Going on 30

    2004

Jennifer Garner stars as a teenager who wakes up one day as a 30-year-old woman. Although the plot is beyond belief, the ride is a lot of fun. Garner is the right mixture of befuddlement and wonder. You can see the awe and confusion in her eyes. Mark Ruffalo costars as her potential love interest.

  • Kate & Leopold

    2018

If you had to suspend your disbelief for 13 Going on 30, watch out for this one. Meg Ryan stars as Kate, who is just living her life in the 21st century. Suddenly, 19th-century Leopold, played with true aplomb by Hugh Jackman, enters Kate’s life. One of my favorite rom coms in recent years...mostly because it's different from the rest of the pack.

  • Chocolat

    2001

Here are Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, and Judi Dench all in one movie. If that’s not enough for you, add France. And, of course, chocolate. That’s enough for me. But, in addition to all of that good stuff, the plot is lots of fun and highly entertaining.

  • Shall We Dance?

    2004

Not really a rom com, but it has that feel. It has all the makings for a great rom com...Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere. But, they are not the couple du jour. Gere is married to Susan Sarandon, and their relationship is in need of revitalization. Enter dance instructor Lopez, who teaches Gere some moves.

  • Can You Keep a Secret?

    2019

Based on a Sophie Kinsella novel (fans of Kinsella know this is not going to be a “thought-provoking, deep” film), there is very little about this movie that is not fun. After a young woman, during a near-death experience on a plane, spills her life’s troubles to her seatmate, she finds herself in a bit of a corner after that seatmate turns out to be her new boss.

  • Baby Boom

    1987

This starts out as a straight comedy and turns into a rom com. Regardless of which part of the film you’re watching, all of it will keep a smile on your face. Diane Keaton has never been better as a New York corporate advertising executive who becomes a fish out of water as a new mother and out-of-work small-town resident.

  • Blow Dry

    2018

Just like Bottle Shock is a fun look at the wine business, this is an equally fun take on the hair business. Yes, HAIR...stylists, beauticians, barbers. Also starring Alan Rickman, this time as a stylist who is determined to win the National Hair Championships. Bet you didn’t know that was a thing? It is, and it makes this highly entertaining to watch.

  • Happy Texas

    1999

When two escaped convicts get pulled over (in a stolen car, of course) driving through Happy, Texas, they are sure that back to prison they will go. But, the owner of the car has a different idea in mind. Part madcap, part screwball, this one is all a delightful surprise.
